Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
