Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
